2 High Gale, Ambleside, Cumbria
My brother owns this 3rd floor flat, converted out of the attic floor of a large Victorian terraced house, and with spectacular views across Ambleside and the Langdales beyond.
There was still a small loft space above, just large enough for another room. To minimise any loss of volume and headroom, I upgraded the existing ceiling joists with a plywood ‘stressed skin’ deck and used multi-layer insulation foils between and beneath the rafters. The room is reached via a compact alternating tread staircase.
It feels like a wood cabin perched over the rooftops of Ambleside, somehow both cosy and exposed!
